This class serves as an introduction to planning for the students in the urban planning program. As an introductory class, it covers a good deal of material, which is clearly called out in the calendar, and in the in-depth set of readings. The lecture notes detail case studies covered in the class, from three different metropolitan areas.

課程為MCP第一學期的學生介紹了規劃人員面臨持久的主題和挑戰。課程的目標是︰
This class introduces first semester MCP students to the persistent themes and challenges facing planners. The goals of this class are:
- 激發學生關於他們所選專業的興趣；
to excite students about their chosen profession;
- 提供規劃人員思考將採用何種行動的理論框架；
to offer a theoretical framework for thinking about the kinds of interventions that planners are expected to take;
- 向學生介紹規劃領域裡一些非常有趣和具有挑戰性的理論爭論；
以及to introduce students to some of the most interesting and challenging theoretical debates in the planning field; and
- 促使學生思考如何充分利用時間以保證他們的個人職業發展。
to press students to think about the best way of using their time to ensure their own personal professional development.
