課程重點
本課程由自由活動月(IAP)提供，自由活動月是個為期四星期的課程，在MIT從一月份的第一個星期起直到一月份結束。本課程活動會集中在實習大樓，學習使用自己的史特靈引擎，細節請參考專題部分。
This course is offered during the Independent Activities Period (IAP), which is a special 4-week term at MIT that runs from the first week of January until the end of the month The course revolves around students building and 'racing' their own Stirling engines, which is covered in greater detail in the projects section.
課程描述
本課程會介紹各種機械工具原理和相關電腦軟體的使用。讓學生操作各種機械工具如帶鋸、銑床和車床。上課會運用到的軟體有MATLAB®, MAPLE®, XESS™和CAD。活動重點在於解決問題，而不是單純學習程式設計或建立演算法。作業以與機械工程主題相關之專題為取向。建議學生們可以在決定主修機械工程後，利用第一個自由活動月選修這門課。
This course introduces the fundamentals of machine tool and computer tool use. Students work with a variety of machine tools including the bandsaw, milling machine, and lathe. Instruction given on MATLAB®, MAPLE®, XESS™, and CAD. Emphasis is on problem solving, not programming or algorithmic development. Assignments are project-oriented relating to mechanical engineering topics. It is recommended that students take this subject in the first IAP after declaring the major in Mechanical Engineering.
