學生應於教學大綱中指定之日期前完成指定之研讀，研讀後進行的課程討論將更為豐富有趣。最後一堂課將舉行簡短的期末測驗，且學生須於自由活動期結束前（亦即第25節課）繳交學期報告。
我們將竭盡所能於此秋季課程中教授以下三大主題：
- 經濟學歷史；特別是工業化與人口變遷等長期過程，以及影響它們的政策。
- 應用經濟學；著重於眾多已被用於建立與驗證假說的方法。
- 論文撰寫；以批判精神檢證經濟史著述，使學生有機會練習撰寫具專業期刊水準的論文（部分學期報告經修訂後已具此水準）
學期報告為本課程之書面作業中最重要的一環，除遭逢不可預期之狀況，否則請準時繳交。遲交者將被扣分，遲交日數過長則有無法通過本課程之虞，故請慎重擬定計劃。
本課程備有閱讀資料選集，由於需支付重製權利金，因此價格不斐。相關閱讀資料清單中，除Ashton（主題1A）與Temin（主題4A,B）的短篇叢書外的所有書目，皆收錄於選集中。
The assigned reading should be completed before the date noted on the syllabus. Class discussion will be more productive and enjoyable if you have done the reading. There will be a short final exam in the last scheduled class period and a term paper that is due at the end of IAP, that is, on Session 25.
We will endeavor to teach you about three things in the course of this fall:
- Economic History, in particular, processes like industrialization and demographic change that took a long time, and policies that affected them.
- Applied Economics, emphasizing the great variety of approaches that have been used to formulate and test hypotheses.
- Paper Writing, by examining critically the economic-history literature and giving you an opportunity to practice writing a paper suitable for a professional journal (as some term papers, after revision, have been).
The term paper is the most important part of the written requirement for this subject. Extensions will be given only for unanticipatable events. Late papers will receive lowered grades on a gradient that makes passing this course problematical with a paper that is more than a few days late. Plan accordingly.
A reading packet is available for the rather high price that results from paying for reproduction rights. It contains all the readings except the short books by Ashton (Topic 1F) and Temin (Topics 4A, 4B).
