The course consists of lectures, readings, discussions, panels of guest speakers, group and individual projects. The purpose of the lectures, readings, discussion and panels of guest speakers is to explore a variety of aspects of adolescence and adolescent health. The group and individual projects are meant to help students develop skills to work in multi-disciplinary teams and analyze adolescent health concerns through conceptual frameworks and recommend effective solutions through interventions.

At the conclusion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Understand the biological and psychological developmental processes that occur during adolescence and puberty.
  2. Identify major health concerns affecting adolescents in both the domestic and international domains.
  3. Frame major health concerns affecting adolescents within a conceptual framework to understand their key determinates that include risk and protective factors within the biological, social, cultural, behavioral, political and environmental domains.
  4. Analyze major health concerns affecting adolescents in an effort to recommend effective interventions to improve the health of adolescences.
  5. Explore four topical areas (reproductive health, adolescents with disabilities, substance use and juvenile justice) in depth to understand the interplay of key determinates in different settings through guest speakers and case studies.
  6. Develop necessary facilitation skills to effectively moderate panels of guest speakers as part of the topic specific case studies.
  7. Work in multi-disciplinary teams to create a poster presentation on a major health concern affecting adolescents, which includes creating a poster for visual display and a brief oral presentation similar to those conducted at professional conferences.
  8. Demonstrate critical and analytical thinking by preparing a written report on a major health concern affecting adolescents that includes a description of the magnitude of the concern, a conceptual framework and a recommended intervention.

Course Requirements

> Class Participation

Students are expected to complete required reading prior to the appropriate session. Students will be assessed on both active participation and listening throughout the duration of the course.

> Written Questions

Students are expected to generate five questions for each of the four guest lecture panels based on the required readings. Students will be assessed on their depth of understanding of the readings and their ability to create analytical questions to be used during guest lecture panels.

> Panel Moderation

Students will be assigned to small multi-disciplinary groups to moderate one of the four guest lecture panels. Groups are expected to work with the teaching assistant to combine individual written questions in an effort to facilitate the guest lecture panels. Students are also expected to moderate guest lecture panels by asking questions, helping to facilitate panel discussions and fielding additional questions of classmates.

> Poster Presentation

Students will be assigned to small multi-disciplinary groups to create visual and oral poster presentations. Groups are expected to create a poster presentation addressing an adolescent health concern using guidelines similar to those given at professional conferences. Groups are also expected to give a 10 minute oral presentation of their poster during the poster presentation session and be available to answer questions during the session. Individual students are expected to participate in small group discussion regarding material covered in posters immediately following the poster presentation session.

> Written Report

Students are expected to write an individual paper addressing a particular aspect of adolescent health. It is recommended, but not required, that individual reports are related to the group posters for consistency. The written report should have the meet the following criteria.

  • Clearly define the adolescent health concern.
  • Describe the magnitude of the adolescent health concern.
  • Utilize a conceptual framework to address the key determinates of the concern.
  • Employ evidence-based literature and use only primary sources as references.

The term paper can be any length as long as it meets the previous criteria and does not exceed 15 pages. The reports should have 1 margins, no less than 10 point Times New Roman font and must be double spaced. The paper should use a consistent format for references such as the APA or ICMJE format; and references do not count against the total page count.
