XIA Kai, 21, graduate student of Tsinghua University,
majoring in Electronics Engineering
Several months ago, I used to say "Oops!" when I encountered
anything amazing or surprising. But now, when I mention "OOPS",
I'm probably talking about Opensource Opencourseware Prototype
System, which is also amazing and surprising indeed.
It was about half a year ago when I was surfing on Internet.
I found OOPS program by chance, and then I found it was really
a crazy but great idea. What a fantastic idea to have free access
to so many courses from many prestigious universities!
Therefore I joined in OOPS without any hesitation and became
a volunteer translator. I'm a graduate student majoring in Electronics
Engineering (EE), so I ¡§adopted¡¨ some MIT courses related to
this field. It's really a pleasure for me to help other people
by translating the courseware into Chinese. On the other hand,
translating is also a chance for me to read the original material
from MIT. It has really benefited me.
The open-source spirit is the spirit of sharing. In western
countries, the open-source spirit is already widely spread.
There are dozens of open-source programs such as open-source
software, encyclopedias, and dictionaries. They help spread
knowledge faster and facilitate communication. We need such
open-source spirit in China, and I'm pleased to see that OOPS
is carrying the spirit forward.
