Assignment 5
Accidents
Assigned: Session 4
Due: Session 5
Read the JMA paper "The Facts on Protection Needs in Humanitarian Demining" by Andy Smith.
Follow this with the JMA paper "What Use is a Database of Demining Accidents?" also by Andy Smith.
You should already have the Database of Demining Accidents (DDAS) installed, but if not, then install it now.
In the menu bar, do a "full search" by country. Read 15 reports from your country assigned in class.
Each record documents an accident. The first screen shows some overall statistics, and there are several attached files, which contain the details. Read the Incident/accident report. Under "other documents" tab at the top, double click on analysis or other documents to see them.
Then, answer the following questions.
-
Do your records back up the summaries of accidents in the reading? If so, give examples. If not, explain why.
-
Are there any commonalities between the incidents that could be related to the way things are done in that region?
-
What ideas come to mind for new or modified devices or procedures that could address the accidents that you have read about?
-
Make a list of all of the roles or titles of the different people you read about in the reports.
Submit this assignment by emailing your written answers to each of these questions by the assignment due date.
