SP.287/5.S15/ESG.SP287 - 厨房化学, 2006年春季课程, 特殊课程

MIT OpenCourseWare Update: October 2006

A Monthly E-mail Newsletter for Users
and Friends of MIT OpenCourseWare
----------------------------------------------------------------
The October 2006 MIT OpenCourseWare Update Contains:
1. New Courses Available
2. Updated Courses
3. A Brainteaser
4. MIT Teaches That?
5. OCW Consortium News: opencoursewares launched
6. OCW Consortium News: opencoursewares announced
7. Your Gift Sustains OCW Long-Term

1. New Courses Available
----------------------------------------------------------------
MIT OpenCourseWare (MIT OCW) announces the publication of 14 additional new courses as part of our Fall 2006 course publication cycle. We now offer open access to the educational materials from more than 1450 courses, including the following new courses:

2. Updated Courses
----------------------------------------------------------------
Several users have contacted us in recent months searching for "missing" courses. In fact, there are no courses that have been removed from the MIT OCW Web site, but more than 225 have been updated. MIT OCW began archiving some of its older courses and replacing them with updated versions of those courses in the spring of 2005 (with new years and terms). Some of the courses are substantially different in teaching methodology, while some now offer additional teaching and learning resources.
The latest updated courses include:

Users may have bookmarked their favorite courses on the MIT OCW site. If those bookmarks no longer work, it is because that course has been updated and has a new Web address, not because we took the course down. Please see the complete list of updated courses at http://ocw.mit.edu/OcwWeb/Global/OCWHelp/updatedcourses.htm.

3. A Brainteaser
----------------------------------------------------------------
For those of you who like intellectual challenges, we will present a brainteaser in each email newsletter, the answer to which can be found in one of the courses published in MIT OCW. This month's brainteaser, Three Pancakes, is from the MIT Kitchen Chemistry course:
SP.287/5.S15/ESG.SP287 - Kitchen Chemistry, Spring 2006, Special Programs

You have a hat in which there are three pancakes. One is golden on both sides, one is brown on both sides, and one is golden on one side and brown on the other. You withdraw one pancake, look at one side, and see that it is brown. What is the probability that the other side is brown?

4. MIT Teaches That?
----------------------------------------------------------------
MIT is known primarily for academic excellence in science and engineering. But with 35 excellent departments in five different schools, there are many interesting course subjects that may not be noticed on initial browsing of the MIT OCW site.

The Introduction to Musical Composition and the Harmony and Counterpoint courses include original compositions by MIT students.

21M.301 - Harmony and Counterpoint I, Spring 2005, Music and Theater Arts

21M.302 - Harmony and Counterpoint II, Spring 2005, Music and Theater Arts

5. OCW Consortium News: Two opencoursewares launched
----------------------------------------------------------------
The University of Notre Dame's Kaneb Center for Teaching and Learning launched its OpenCourseWare Web site September 20th, making the materials for eight Notre Dame courses available online, free of charge, to any user in the world. The project will eventually offer 30 courses devoted to understanding the spiritual and moral aspects of life, the human condition, the search for meaning, and conflict resolution, and will align Notre Dame with the OCW Consortium.
The Open University (OU) in the United Kingdom launched its OpenLearn Web site on October 25th. OpenLearn allows anyone in the world to freely access, download and use selected educational resources. Online learning material is taken from Open University courses and uses technologies including videoconferencing, mind maps and instant messaging to get teachers and students interacting and learning.

6. OCW Consortium News: Two opencoursewares announced
----------------------------------------------------------------
University of California at Irvine
The University of California at Irvine (UCI) has joined the OCW Consortium and expects to launch their OCW site in the first half of 2007. Initial courses are expected to focus on science and math for teachers and personal finance planning. Founded in 1965, UCI is among the fastest-growing University of California campuses, with more than 24,000 undergraduate and graduate students and about 1,400 faculty members.

Yale University
Yale University announced its Open Educational Resources Video Lecture Project in September. This project will make digital videos of selected undergraduate courses freely available on the Internet. Specifically, the project will create multidimensional packages-including full transcripts in several languages, syllabi, and other course materials-for seven courses and design a web interface for these materials, to be launched in the fall of 2007.  If the venture proves successful, Yale hopes to significantly expand its online offerings over the next few years. The new venture joins a growing number of university-based initiatives that use the Internet to make educational materials widely available.

7. Your Gift Sustains OCW Long-Term
----------------------------------------------------------------
In offering free and open access to MIT courses, the MIT faculty are giving their educational materials to the world. But maintaining these courses, and evolving MIT OCW to meet the needs of our diverse user audience, has its costs. Thus, we depend on the generosity of users to sustain the MIT OCW project long term. We now offer a quick link to the Donating to MIT OCW section on every page on the MIT OCW Web site. Look for the following button on the top of each page:
