When looking at the complete MIT OCW Course List, look for the red NEW to indicate newly published materials. MIT OCW will publish 150 new, and 75 more updated courses, by the end of April 2006.

2. Ocean Engineering Courses Now Part of Mechanical Engineering
----------------------------------------------------------------
Early in 2005, the MIT Department of Ocean Engineering became a center within the MIT Department of Mechanical Engineering. The MIT Department of Mech E now offers an undergraduate degree in mechanical and ocean engineering; and graduate degrees in ocean engineering, naval architecture, marine engineering, naval engineering, and oceanographic engineering.

For MIT OCW users, you will find that all MIT OCW Ocean Engineering courses will be listed under the MIT Department of Mechanical Engineering on the MIT OCW site, and the individual department page for Ocean Engineering will be removed from the MIT OCW site. No courses have been removed from the MIT OCW Web site, but all Ocean courses will now be listed on the Mech E department page at http://ocw.mit.edu/OcwWeb/Mechanical-Engineering/index.htm.

To assist users in course and topic searchers, all Ocean Engineering courses will have their former Ocean Engineering course number listed in parentheses at the end of the course title. For example:

  • 2.003J / 1.053J Dynamics and Vibration (13.013J), Fall 2002
  • 2.011 Introduction to Ocean Science and Technology (13.00), Fall 2002

The Center for Ocean Engineering at MIT now serves as the focus of all ocean-related activities at MIT, and approximately 140 students are currently pursuing Ocean Engineering degrees at MIT.

3. The Economics of Open Content
----------------------------------------------------------------
Together with Intelligent Television (www.intelligenttelevision.com) in New York, MIT OCW co-sponsored a two-day symposium on "The Economics of Open Content" at MIT on January 23-24, 2006. Among the 35 featured speakers examining new business models in fields from software to courseware were New Yorker staff writer and bestselling author (The Wisdom of Crowds) James Surowiecki, Sumir Meghani of Yahoo!, and Yale Law School Professor Yochai Benkler.

Many of the symposium participants expressed a profound interest in making the proceedings available online and in organizing follow-up gatherings to bring together stakeholders in open content from various disciplines. Streaming video and downloadable podcasts from the proceedings are now available on WGBH's Forum Network (http://forum.wgbh.org/wgbh/forum.php?lecture_id=0197). In addition, a Wiki environment has been opened for more participatory conversations at http://www.opencontent.archival.tv. Intelligent Television is planning follow-up sessions in New York on June 5-6 and in San Francisco on September 11-12, 2006. More detailed information is available at: www.intelligenttelevision.com/opencontent.htm

4. Open Educational Resources Survey
----------------------------------------------------------------
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) is a group of 30 member countries sharing a commitment to democratic government and the market economy. With active relationships with 70 other countries, NGOs and civil society, the OECD has a global reach.

The OECD is studying the impact on open educational resources in higher education, and would invite MIT OCW users to participate in a Web-based survey for individual teachers, instructors and researchers using or producing OER. All MIT OCW users working in a higher educational institution that uses or produces open learning content -- such as courses, courseware, learning objects, collections and journals, or open software tools to develop, use, re-use and deliver learning content -- to take the survey. It will not take more than 10 to 15 minutes to complete.

Take the survey at http://www2.oecd.org/survey/Surveys/TakeSurvey.aspx?surveyid=1075 All MIT OCW users completing the questionnaire will receive a free electronic copy of the final report.

For more information regarding the study, please visit the OECD's Directorate for Education.
